MUSEUM RULES OF DECORUM
The Hawai’i State Art Museum is the “people’s museum” and belongs to everyone. We ask that everyone in the galleries – visitors, volunteers, and staff – follow these rules to make the museum experience more enjoyable for all.
- Join us in preserving the artwork for future generations. Artwork can be damaged by even the slightest contact. Please refrain from touching the art or pedestals.
- Backpacks, large bags/items, and umbrellas: For safety reasons, all items larger than 11 x 15 must be checked in and held at the security desk on the second floor.
- Smoking & Food. Smoking is prohibited throughout State buildings. As of 11/20/06 Hawai’i enacted a new smoking law. No smoking is allowed within 20 feet of doorways, windows, and ventilation intakes of the following areas: enclosed public spaces and places of employment. No food or drink is allowed in the museum galleries.
- Mobile phones. Use of mobile phones, pagers and other electronics that make noise is not permitted in the galleries.
- Pets. Animals are not permitted in the museum with the exception of trained assistance animals.
- Photography. Flash photography is not permitted. Hand-held still and video photography in existing light is allowed in the galleries for private, noncommercial, or educational use. Photography is not permitted in special exhibitions or areas designated as “no photography.” For press, filming and other special photography, please contact the State Film Office at 808.586.2570. No photographs taken in the museum may be reproduced, distributed, or sold without permission.
