The Hawai’i State Art Museum has three second floor galleries: the Sculpture Lobby, the ‘Ewa Gallery and the Diamond Head Gallery. The total size of these three galleries is approximately 12,000 square feet. HiSAM is also comprised of other exhibition and live event areas including the Front Lawn, the Second Floor Lanai, the First Floor Lobby Entrance, the Capitol Cultural District Visitor Center Area, the Downtown Restaurant and the HiSAM Gift Store.
Currently the main galleries are located on the second floor. The Second Floor Sculpture Lobby is approximately 2,000 square feet and houses exceptional 3D works from the Art in Public Places Collection. Like the First Floor Lobby area, a security and information desk is positioned in the Sculpture Lobby where security and volunteers greet museum visitors, take their bags and give information and advice.
The 4,000 square foot ‘Ewa Gallery houses both 3D and 2D artwork. This gallery contains master works from the APP Collection and has a minimal impact rotation schedule that includes the Annual Scholastic Art Competition for Hawai’i’s 7th through 12th grade students. Artwork in this gallery documents Hawai’i’s visual art history since the 1960’s and before.
The Diamond Head Gallery is the largest gallery in the museum with 6,200 square feet of exhibition space. The Diamond Head Gallery features large scale temporary exhibitions as well as an Exploration Station for hands on experiential learning. Both the ‘Ewa Gallery and the Diamond Head Gallery open on to Bella Italia porticos, where VIP seating for lawn events and other activities takes place.
